It sounds like it might be blossom end rot--it can affect apples too. It's caused by a fungus. I'm not at work, so I can't open up the amazing Ortho Problem Solver Book, but get thee to your local nursery and, if they have that book, see what they recommend--otherwise, just browse the fungicide aisle until you find one that takes care of that particular disease.
