Re: Potatoes & Mulching


Rodney:

I have always heard to mulch potatoes so that the vines will produce spuds
along the entire length of the stem.  However, I have never (at least in
the two years I have grown them) found that the plants do produce along the
entire length of the main stem.  My potatoes have only produced new spuds
right at or just below the soil surface.

This year I planted 16 seed potatoes and by June had applied about 1.5 feet
of mulch to the growing plants.  However, all the tatters I dug where at
ground level or below.
