Hi,
For those who are new to the list, I have started treating summer the way
Northerners treat Winter, as in , don't even try to grow anything.
I think I can now declare that my garden is completely closed for the
summer. While I still hve Sweet Potatoes and Peppers growing, they are
doing so without my help. Everything else is long since harvested and
composted.
I am getting ready for the fall season by building deep layers of mulch on
my beds. I had thought to solarize them to kill nematodes, but decided to
trust a good strong soil life to help my plants grow in spite of them. I
have very active worms and streaks of fungi throughout every bed that I am
sure would cook out before any nematodes died.
Sometime soon, and I could use some advice on the exact timing, I will
start planting the more sturdy crops, like squash and beans, then later,
after the worst of the heat is gone, lettuce and pea type things.
This fall planting worked pretty well last year, but I didn't do a very
extensive planting so I m not sure about a full garden. Hopefully I will
get a good enough crop to harvest before our almost nonexistent Winter, so
I can do a early spring planting in January.
The January planting did -very- well last year, so I have high hope for
this year.
This might be working! I am almost suprised...
