I cut the two legs off about mid-length and place a small melon in each leg,
knotting the end on the trellis or wire. The legs expand to hold up to a
six-pound cantaloupe. For watermelons, I use the entire leg as a sling,
knotting each end on the trellis or wire. Sometimes, if the melon grows
really huge, I have to go back and add a couple more strips of pantyhose or
cloth for added support. The Master Gardeners in Harris County, Texas
(Houston) use this same method in their trial gardens at Bear Creek Park, if
anyone is interested in seeing them, who lives in the Houston area.
