We'll I'm "lucky" -- I have a great excuse. We moved here last year, and I
was all psyched up to start a garden for the first time in years (we lived
in an apartment before this) I carefully selected a couple of dozen plants
and happily trotted out to the back yard with a shovel. That's when I
discovered that our entire yard consists of 2 inches of top soil on top of
a natural shelf of shale!

There was much hurrying around to scrounge up enough large pots for a "pot
garden", but it was disastrous - nothing bore fruit - not even zuchini!

I did the raised bed SFG this year, and I go out every evening just to
stare at it and marvel at the results!

Still, I'll be glad when we move and I can do SFG without having to build a
bed -- even with the results I'm getting, there's no way the vegetables
will pay for the lumber and top soil! (At least, not THIS year)
