Brown chafer, Japanese beetle, and a couple of other 'scarab' beetles are
out now.
All are about the size you describe, Japanese are more irridescent than the
brown chafer, but I think the brown one does more lawn damage in it's larvae
stage.
According to Gardens Alive!, they have a product (organic) that gets the
larvae of both species, and if you use something only good for the Japanese
beetle, the other, more aggressive ones will take over.
And, we're also seeing an unusual number of locusts (cicadas) shedding skin
right now. They're the size and color you describe, but rare that they'd
crash into anyone.
The 'June Bugs', (Japanese beetles), will definitely bomb you, especially at
night near a light source, and in the early dawn hours.
