Fall Planting

After reading about planting for fall.  I was wondering, should you plant 
from seed.  My broccoli will soon be gone and I will have a space.  Some said 
to plant more broccoli or lettuce.

Transplants or seeds and when for fall.  Any suggestions, I am in CT near NYC.
