Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Different fencing, different wire gauge, and volts, etc, deliver different
charges with wildly different results. I have used ele fence in the past in
a foolish attempt to keep deer and my goats out of a corn field. The only
thing it kept out was ME. We've used ele fence, one low strand posted 6"
inside of a hog fence to keep baby pigs inside. This wasn't a high load
system, but it still killed a cat when she touched both fences, ele and
wire fence, at the same time. It WOULD have killed another one. She turned
to bite at it and it 'froze' her to the fence in several places. Had to get
a broom handle to pry her off of it. I turned it off, packed the unit up
and won't use them anymore. I can see where a child, crawling in the damp
grass underneath an electric fence could be killed by it.
Very off topic here: But, I was hauling hay out of a neighbor's pasture.
They weren't home but 2 kids came into the adjoining meadow to 'pet' the 2
yr old Brahman bulls in the pen. I was mildly concerned but everyone looked
like this was a daily happening. Only, one young guy started pushing and
shoving the others around, getting more 'onery' than usual. The kids
started backing up, but the gate was some distance away. The fence was
lined with 5 strands of electric wire about as thick as a pencil each. I
broke open a bale and 'sacrificed' one of the them to occupy the bulls
while the kids could back out. Otherwise, someone (myself and the children)
were about to get severely shocked since I wasn't about to let the kids
stay in the field if the critters were going to moooove in on them.
Moral: In a lot of applications, ele and solar ele are a great way to go,
in places that are inaccessible, or not near an active area. But in
gardens, yards, play areas, I just don't think electric fencing has a safe
place.
