Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Dear Square Foot Gardeners,
I have been following the "potato" thread with interest. I have 26
squares of potoatoes planted and was starting to worry after reading from
those that didn't get much, if any, harvest.
About two weeks ago one of my plants fell over from a hard rain, so I
dug it up--just to see how they were doing. I got about three new potato
sized, and four pearl onion sized. They cooked up fine and tasty.
I got a late start planting, they went in the ground April 15th. I
planted them shallowly, one per square. As they started growing I just
piled on soil mix and made a mound. The growth is about 2-3 feet out of the
mound. I was hoping for more than five potatoes per plant and just figured
it was due to digging up too soon. Reading the thread prompted me to go dig
again. I dug up one of my "All Blue" and found five beautiful purple new
potato sized and a bunch of little pearl sized. I just pulled off the
larger ones, and replanted the plant to see if the little ones will grow
anymore.
Did I just get lucky? Will the little potatoes grow some more? This is
my first year trying vegetables and the square foot way seemed the most
practical. Several of my friends already use the square foot method and now
I'm hooked too.
Just my little observation.
