Hey, 

I too am growing melons vertical style for the first time.  I decided 
to only try one this year and see how well it does.  I planted one 
seed and got one plant.  I am growing it up a string type trellis.  I 
have about 5 cantalope growing about 25 to 50 cent piece size. I 
planted it about the middle of May, after our last frost.  It started 
slowly, but is now doing great.  I need to buy some pantyhose to make 
the slings.  Keep in touch, I would like to know how your melons go, 
and if you suceed with your "goal."
