Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi everyone,

A while back I had asked everyone's opinion on how to keep the squash vine
borer from devastating my zucchini plants. Everyone that replied had some
great tips for me and so I tried a few. One of the tips was to plant them
out a little early so I did that with 4 plants(at least I thought it was
early). The plants were doing quite nicely until I went on vacation last
week. What I had been doing was covering the vine with dirt as it was
growing. It seemed to be working, the plants were all doing well and I had
harvested 6 zucchini up to that point. I came back from vacation on Saturday
and found wilted zucchini plants, they looked like they hadn't been watered
in weeks meanwhile everything else in the garden was doing wonderfully.
Well, I knew what had happened, I just didn't know it could happen so
quickly. Can they really wipe out a plant so quickly or did I have them
before I left for vacation and didn't even know it? Well, I cut open the
stem and sure enough the inside of the vine was mush and further up the
disgusting grubs were doing their thing. I got a real satisfaction out of
squashing those little bastards, at least they won't come back to haunt me
next year!:-)
Well, at least I got 8 zucchini this year, two were on one of the dying
plants, that is more than I got last year! Next year I will try a little
earlier and maybe I will try wrapping the vine in pantyhose. Oh well, live
and learn!! Thanks again for all of the tips, this is a great list!
