Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
It's my first year as a sqft gardener. Enjoy the discussions here
immensely.
Previous to this I was a tomatoes & peppers guy along the side of the house.
I decided to try vertical melons and grew a "Sunshine hybrid" purchased
from Wal-Mart or K-Mart or some other, uh...... mart. Planted one in the
center of 4 blocks and erected a 6'hx18"w solid white vinyl trellis behind
it,
hoping to get the vine to at least reach the second rung.
That was 2 months ago. Today I have a monstrous green tentacled
creature occupying the corner of this 4' x 4' bed where that little plant
used to
be. To date it seems to have devoured the little plant itself, most of the
trellis and is part way through with the 2' high chicken-wire fence
surrounding the bed. I fear for my safety.
Seriously, though, considering the size of the vine and the abundance of
blossoms, I was hoping to see more than a just few marble-sized fruits,
most of which seem to be browning in the heat.
Should I prune some of the vines back? The trellis is plenty sturdy to
support the vine, the fruit and any critters that climb up to try and
take a bite.
When are these usually harvested? I like watching the vine grow and
all, but at least one melon would be nice just to give me something to brag
about.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

this afternoon.
