Tomato spirals w/ melons etc.

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

We have heavy winds here in fall (called Santa Ana winds). THe spirals
seem to work great. I've never had to tie any of my crops to the
spirals: squash, cukes, eggplant, limas, beans or tomatoes. I have a
clay loam soil too though. Maybe they wouldn't be as wind resistant in
a light sandy soil. I have the 6 ft. tall ones. I am growing butternut
squash on them this year. We'll see how they do in fall w/ the large
squash growing on them. I love the spirals. The only problem I ever
had was when I just trimmed the tomatoes to 1 main leader. There wasn't
enough foliage cover to prevent sunscalding of the fruits. This year I
trained two leaders to go up the spriral. Works much better and no
sunscald.
