I finally got my book back from my friend.  The passage mentioning aquarium
charcoal is on page 120, 3rd paragraph, where he gives his soil recipe for
container gardening. (This is in the paperback version, Copyright 1981)

I guess I just skipped over the Patio Gardening section because I was
planning on making a couple of 4'x4' raised beds.  I guess it's time I read
the book cover to cover to see what other useful information I may have
missed.
