That's indeed the hard part!
Boiling water will percolate down into an active fire-ant mound OK but
usually not to the depths where the workers keep the queen safe.
99% of all fire-ant killing is killing the workers. Unless a killing agent
gets carried back deep into the mound by the workers, where it can contact
the queen, the effort to kill the ants is probably doomed to fail.
Insecticide-laced bait products, which get carried into the mound as a food
item, are the best bet among today's registered products for fire-ant-control.
