Cat feces can carry harmful pathogens that can be dangerous for people and
especially pregnant women and their unborn babies. I really don't know if I
would be encouraging them to go in my garden by leaving soil for them to dig
in. They aren't just digging there they are using it as their litter box!
I'd be careful. If they aren't going in your garden then they are probably
going in the guy next doors yard! Do everyone a favor and keep your kitties
in the house, not everyone wants to be scooping cat poop out of the garden.
Believe it or not but some people actually keep their cats in the house!
I know that there are some gardening catalogs that sell a motion sensitive
attachment that hooks up to your garden hose and lets out a burst of water
at the offending animal. You could try that. I'm sure that the neighborhood
cats would soon get the hint to avoid your garden. Good luck!

>Maggie,
You can probably blame the nibbled lemon thyme on the cats. Some of my cats
like it better than catnip.

I put my tomato cages over newly planted rows to discourage the cats.
Unfortunately, once I've planted the tomatoes, I have nothing to use, but by

that time I have usually mulched the garden with straw which they don't
like. If I'm in the garden and see them digging, I spray them with the hose.

It doesn't have to be a strong spray since they hate being wet.

The catnip and lemon thyme I surround with chicken wire. The plants grow
through the wire, but the cats can't get at the core of the plant and
destroy it. This gives them something to enjoy.

I use to leave a small strip of soil so they would have a place to dig, but
I didn't do that this year. Hope I won't be sorry. I need my cats for mice
patrol and I enjoy their antics.
