Isn't the pantyhose a preventative
measure.....she's already been attacked by the borer. I think you're
supposed to cut a slit in the stem and fish out the borer and then hill up the
soil around the slit in the stem. I've never had this problem
(fortunately) but I remember reading about it in a few books. I'm sure
someone here on this list with a bit more knowledge than myself will be able to
advise you more accurately.
