Isn't the pantyhose a preventative measure.....she's already been attacked by the borer.  I think you're supposed to cut a slit in the stem and fish out the borer and then hill up the soil around the slit in the stem.  I've never had this problem (fortunately) but I remember reading about it in a few books.  I'm sure someone here on this list with a bit more knowledge than myself will be able to advise you more accurately.

Ann...sounds like the squash borer has done a good job??
Someone awhile back suggested that you wrap the stems of squash with panty hose...I did it and it works....so all my squash are now wearing panti hose...they love it (:-)))
I had lost about 3 squash before I tried the panti hose and have not lost any since...the squash borer cannot climb up the pantihose.   Hope it works for you...Maureen

Help! Two of my gorgeous yellow squash plants wilted overnight. The lower
stem and root turned to mush. The others look fine. What can I do to save the
rest? Insect? Fungus?
