Various

This is addressed primarily to Doreen Howard, but I think others may be
interested in my questions and observations, too.
I wish I could have made your party but my circumstances are such that it
is difficult for me to get away (my wife has Alzheimer's). I thoroughly
enjoyed your recap of it.
I found about Square Foot Gardening just this spring so I was not able to
put in a garden this year, although I will have one this fall. I live about
30 miles west of Fredericksburg, Texas in the heart of the so-called "Texas
Hill Country" and we are inundated with deer. The peach growers here have
to erect 8 feet high fences around their orchards or the deer will decimate
their peach crops. The same holds true if you try to have a vegetable
garden, even in town. I am having a high fence built around my proposed
garden area even as I speak.
        Now, on to gardening things.
I raised a few tomato plants on a windowsill and set them out in
containers on our deck. I have 3 "Patio" plants and 4 "Better Bush Cherry
Improved" plants. So far I have 4 or 5 Patios about 1/4 inch in diameter
and 2 Better Bush an inch in diameter with several other very small ones.
I am disappointed, especially after reading about your tomato bonanza.
I set these plants in the containers April 15 (We had a late freeze).
Since I put them out they have grown considerably and have put out numerous
blossoms, but they don't seem to be producing tomatoes very fast. I have
yet to eat a home-grown tomato this year.

1. Which varieties did you plant? (According to your recap you had 14
plants and only one plant of each variety.)
2. Did you buy seedlings or raise them from seeds?
3. If you raised them from seeds, from which company or companies did you
purchase your seeds? (The 2 seed catalogs I have are Park Seed and
Territorial Seed Co. and none of your varieties was listed in either of
these catalogs.)
4. How did you raise your seeds? Do you have a greenhouse, use a hotbox or
sunbox, or a growlamp?
5. How did you decide which varieties to grow?
6. When did you set the plants in the garden?
7. Did you use "Wall-o-Waters"?
8. Are your plants all indeterminate are did you plant any determinate
varieties?
9. How many people are you feeding with those 14 tomato plants? (I enjoy
canning and would like to put up enough for 2 people (me and my wife) for
an entire year.)
10. Where did you get the mycorrhizal fungi to set blossoms?

I hope you don't mind answering my questions.
