Hope you don't mind me replying. I am trying the Great Internet Tomato
Experiment, which I am really excited about. One of the rec.gardens members
sells the fungi, and volcanic minerals and a marvelous pelleted fertilizer
made of fish and other organic goodies. Its time release, so easy to use and
not stinky like the liquid. Don asserted that tomatoes grown this way,
including a living mulch of clover, would yield much better. Others
poo-pah'd his statements, and the experiment was born. Theres about a dozen
of us, growing a control plant and a "Don's method" plant (he supplied all
the neceesary stuff gratis for shipping costs only) and one of the other
members who has a major science backgound is collecting data. He calls it a
"quick and dirty experiment", and the data collected may be of value in
convincing goverment or university or other sources to conduct full-fledged
trials (thats our hope, anyway, and the OG people are going to push for it
because if the trials show statistically significant differences, it may be a
help in convincing commercial growers to look more seriously at OG methods)
I am trialing 2 types of tomatoes, one San Marzano and a Parks Whopper. THe
San Marzano's (that I grew from seed) went in last Sat, and I bought the
Whopper seedlings today and put them in. I can already see a diffference in
growth, with the organic innoculated plant with better color, more new
growth, and less bugs, I had to spray the control for what looked like flea
beetles.
You can contact Don at Don@bio-organics.com, he can send you info on the VAM
innoculant ( its not terribly expensive, a 1 cup container is enough ,so far,
for me to get most of the larger plants in my 550 sqft garden, with enough
left over for ornamentals)
The reason I posted this instead of private e-mail is because I wanted to
share with everybody about the experiment. I'm really excited about it and
am hoping to see good results, so the note from the member about her success
was a big boost-thanks! I've got a close friend helping me garden this year,
and we are hoping to can and preserve enough for two families. So this is a
good sign, as we both use lots of 'mater sauce and stewed ones too and hope
for enough from the 12 SanMarzanos I planted. I never grew them before, does
anyone know if they are usually very productive?
