Hi,
Congradulations on your find! Rosemary is wonderful with most meats, but
my favorite is with pork roasts. It prefers a somewhat dry soil, so
becareful when bringing inside for the winter (most varieties are tender
perennials) that you give it a sunny place. The trick is really the
watering: you want to keep the soil slightly moist, but never saturated.
It does not like wet feet. It's helpful to mist it to keep the foilage
from drying out.
It blooms in pots best when the roots are crowded.
Take a few cuttings and start these, as often it is difficult to keep the
mother plant, but the cuttings will do fine.
Herbalistic legend has it that the flowers were once white. Mary, of
biblical times, was said to have layed her blue cloak over the plant, from
which it came to have the blue flowers we know today, and also perhaps it's
name. The early latin (ros maris OR dew of the sea) comes from its
dew-like appearance of the blossom from a distance.
Good luck!
Pam
