Squash Pollination

I've seen a lot on the list lately about pollinating squash by hand with a
paintbrush.  Is this necessary for "garden-variety" zucchini, namely Golden
Bush Hybrid?  If so, how do you tell the boy flowers from the girls? 8-) Mine
are now starting to bloom and I don't want a decreased yield if possible.
