Dave,
Lucky you! Rice hulls are the best for mulching. A liberal dose of
rice hulls will discourage slugs. Water well first. Then apply a four or
five inch layer of hulls. Water again to set them. Most sprouts will be
eaten by the birds. The rest will die a natural death due lack of flooding.
Don't waste them in the compost pile. I used to use them exclusively. Ever
since Arkansas became the "uno numero" U.S. producer of chickens, rice hulls
have been scarer than hen's teeth for the home gardener. The hulls are used
by the ton in Tyson, Hudson, and Holly Farms chicken houses. I've had to
resort to cotton seed hulls. They're the second best must mulch.
