Chicken feathers are a wonderful source of carbon. I even collect hair for the local poodle parlor for my compost pile. The owner of the establishment worried that I'd be putting fleas in my compost, but it doesn't happen. The pile gets so hot that the fleas run!!! Other good sources of carbon are beauty parlors and barbershops and cabinet shops for sawdust. I'm not to proud to beg at all of them for leftovers. Green stuff for compost is alway easy to come by, but carbon (other than in fall when leaves fall) is another story.
