Hi Dave, I live in an extremely hostile critter zone, and I put up a 2' high chicken wire fence this year. So far, nothing has touched the garden. The small fence was the cheap way out, but I think the most consistently damaging critters are rabbits and the fence work well to keep them out. I didn't even put a gate in. Just step over. If deer wanted in, ...oh well.
