Marigold location, squash caging, strawberries

Just a few questions from a newby square footer :)
        1. My garden is roughly 20'x10', square foot style, with various
tomato, summer squash, winter squash, pole beans, lettuce and beets. I have
about twelve marigold plants that I can put in the garden and I'm wondering
if it would be more beneficial to put them next to a particular plant, or to
intersperse them throughout the garden. I know marigolds are supposed to be
good to keep away some pests, but I'm not sure which ones. Since my garden
isn't very large, will it even matter what they are planted directly next to?
        2. After my first summer squash seeds didn't come up, my second
planting is looking good :) In the SQFT book (page 135), Mel made a
passing mention of covering my squash plants with a cage and screen to try
to prevent the squash borer moth from laying its eggs. Any idea on when I do
this? And for how long? (They are not trellised.) I live in Zone 5/6,
southwestern Pennsylvania.
        3. Okay, this isn't SQFT-related, but I thought I'd sneak it in
anyway. Can anyone tell me why my strawberries are soooooo tiny? They are
Tristar variety, grown in strawberry jars, and this is the first year for
them. I understand that first year plants aren't as productive as
second-year...could this be the only reason?

TIA,
Jackie .... Each day is a gift, that's why it's called
the present. :)
