Slugs, Snails and Strawberries !

OK, it's not quite Sex, Lies and Videotapes but here's my question.

Has anybody got any tried and tested method of keeping
slugs and snails off strawberries. Why oh why do they
only go for the ripe red berries just before you pick them ?
