I believe the 1 per square foot method was in an old issue of Organic
Gardening. It suggested tying the plant to a pole as it grew. I tried it
with laughable results, the zukes seem to really want that 9- 12 square
feet and will get it !
I am growing "spacemiser" zucchini this year and I 've given them about 4
square feet, but they are looking expansionist already. Coincidentally, I
just checked on what I assumed was a volunteer pumpkin (I've had them
volunteer for several years running via my compost) only to see two tiny
zucchinis on the plant. It's amazing to have fruiting zucchini in Oregon in
June. I do love the surprises the garden can provide !
