Green Leafhoppers

Does anyone have any suggestions for combating "green leafhoppers," at least 
that's what I think they're called.  Look like little green armored tanks 
with wings, exactly the same color as plant stems.  They are attacking my 
blackeyed peas, pole and bush beans and even eggplant and okra.  They seem to 
be sucking the stems which causes the stems to bend at the point of attack, 
fall over and eventually die.  I've just been picking off and squashing as 
many as I can.
