Re: Diatematrous Earth Now Diatom(aceous) Earth

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Many thanks to Frank for re-reiterating information that I have also written about before. It never hurts to hear a message on safety again. Masks are cheap, costing under $1.00.

My main intent was to tell people a bit about the unusual plant(algae) called the diatom, so they would have the correct spelling. Now they can look up the term Diatom(aceous) Earth for themselves. The safety tips are important, yet secondary to my real purpose.

Even though most Diatomaceous Earth is mined from ancient oceans beds, Diatoms still live today in the cool oceans and in cool fresh water streams and lakes.

Thanks for chipping in;-)

I'll quote here from Occupational Health: Recognizing and Preventing Work-Related Disease, 3rd Edition, Levy and Wegman, 1995:

"Diatomaceous earth is an amorphous silica material mined predominantly in the western United States. <SNIP> However some processes using diatomaceous earth include heating (calcining) it to remove organic material. This heating process can produce up to 60% crystalline silica as cristobalite, which is highly fibrogenic."

In other words, use the horticultural grade of DE.
