I would bet birds! At times I think their antics are confused with cutworm
antics.

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi! I.ve been lurking for the last several months, and have introduced
myself to some, but I think I just figured out how to actually post to the
list (fingers crossed). I'm a zone 4 gardener in the southern part of the
Upper Penninsula of Michigan, and I need help.

Sunday night, my corn was up about 2.5 inches. Monday morning, the plants
(32 out of 36) were all laying down like they had been cut down (cutworms?
birds eating the seeds? something else?) Anyway, I put toothpicks around
the others and today they were still surviving. I also put toothpicks
around my peas, cantalopes, lettuce, marigolds, tomatoes and peppers. This
morning, one cantalope had been uprooted, the other cut down, and several
peas were also destroyed. There were also suspicious holes in my pea patch
where it looked like something had dug up my recently replanted peas (the
first batch germinated poorly). Any ideas on the culprit(s) would be
greatly appreciated!

I have really enjoyed the list, and you have brightened my day many a time.

TIA,
Autumn
