I did that one summer when I was a teenager.  I was disappointed when the
onion died after a few months, and forgot all about it.  The next spring I
was surprised to see onions sprouting.  I got two HUGE onions from it.
Your mileage may vary.  But what the heck, you already paid for the onion,
might as well have some fun with it.  Good luck.
