If you don't have any of the normal things to cover your plants, just dump
hay over the tops. It'll keep the frost off the leaves, but you do have to
uncover them pretty promptly, after the threat is over.
I used sheets to cover 2 small fig trees this past spring, and they didn't
keep the frost off as well as the hay. Everywhere a fig branch touched the
sheet itself, it was blackened. They've grown out of the problem, but I
thought I'd lost them for awhile.
