Potatoes

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hello All!

This is a response to the potato question earlier. I'm growing red
potatoes in zone 9 right now. I dug a trench, planted the spuds, then
back-filled with dirt, leaving just a little bit of green each time. I
used loose dirt with completely composted compost so the spuds could expand
at will and be normal-shaped. I read that hay is good but there is a
greater chance of other potato-loving mammals eating the goods. My
original plans were to let them mature in the ground for storage. If you
want to use potatoes for storage, the skins need to thicken and that
happens, so I have read, when the plants have flowered and completely died
on top. However, my plans changed when I got hungry for garden-fresh
spuds, in which case I dug some up while the greens were still alive. The
result was moderately-sized thin-skinned red potatoes that, culinarily,
were awesome! One can harvest spuds anytime, it's just that they will be
smaller, the earlier you harvest. Also, different varieties have different
maturation times. My red potatoes have a shorter maturation time compare
with others. Luckily, in my zone, I will be able to grow another crop this
year. Next year, I will grow twice as many spuds and different varieties!

My $0.02.

Neil
