Okay...I get ready to harvest a luscious-looking square of carrots and
to my dismay they refuse to come out of the ground.  I did have the
sense to water first to soften the soil.  Anyway, first all the tops
snapped off, leaving these pitiful orange stubs at ground level.  Then I
go after them with a trowel, only to have every single one snap off
about 4-5 inches below the ground.  I think my language must have scared
the bugs away from the plants!

So now that I've displayed my ignorance for y'all's amusement, could
someone please tell me how to harvest *whole* carrots?
