Tracy, I've grown tomatoes in the same patch for nearly 30 years (the one
year I moved them, I lost 50% of them to disease) without cover crops in
between. The county extension agent for our area said there had been
research that showed that growing tomatoes prepares the way for tomato
plants to follow. She can't recall the source or particulars, but it may be
that tomatoes establish tomato micorrhyzae (sp?) that facilitate the
growing of tomatoes the next year.
I do rotate chiles and eggplants, however. Margaret L
