Summer squash problems

My yellow and zucchini squash have been a total disaster here in Zone 8, NW 
Louisiana.  Has anyone else had problems?  I planted both transplants and 
seeds and both have had a terrible time with powdery mildew.  I haven't been 
able to find any way to treat this and all plants are slowly dying.  We have 
had an unusually wet spring, could this be the reason?  Thanks for any help.
