Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Gang:
I noticed a couple of questions on growing in a five gallon bucket...
As far as tomatoes go, they are extremely easy to grow under primitive
hydroponic conditions...I would suppose cucumbers are also...
Simply fill the bucket with rainwater, throw in a handful of compost, a
handful of sterile potting soil, and a few pebbles, a few copper pennies
and you have it...(all of the latter are for trace elements...I don't
know what is actually needed but I never had a problem this way...)...If
you want to get fancy you could actually do a bunch of "fancy boy" stuff
with aeration etc, but frankly I do not see the need, nor have I ever
experienced the need...although admittedly I have gotten very heavily
into the "fancy boy" stuff in the past : )...if you have access to them
though mosquito fish are beneficial for a few reasons...crap
guppies(feeders from the local pet store) are also a reasonable
substitute. Just toss four or five in and forget them...as long as the
water is ripe(been there for a month or so..they will do fine)
There are a few advantages to this method, the primary one being as long
as the compost, potting soil, and pebbles are sterile and you trellis the
fruits off the ground soil diseases are pretty much eliminated...the
watering problem is solved, and the system allows for easy genetic
experiments as exceptional varieties are easily preserved and propagated
by moving a portion of them into a home fish tank...In fact you can
actually ripen any green fruits this way by moving the whole structure
inside...
Anyway I shall say no more on this as this is a square foot gardening
list and not a hydroponic gardening list...the point is I love square
foot gardening....I just tend to thing some fruits are better grown by
alternative means...
Very truly yours, Kevin(the fluffy bunny)Mathews
