Well, as a writer myself, I can tell you that nothing sounds particularly odd 
about this situation.  Yes, mistakes/sloppiness/shady dealing can happen in 
royalty statements, but that's why there's a firm in NY that makes its living 
auditing royalty statements on a contingency basis.  
Promotion/publicity/support from a publisher is hardly the norm -- although 
it's nice when it happens -- and it's a shame they're not interested in 
promoting SQF, but the web page doesn't tell me anything that's particularly 
oddball.   
I doubt they can stop him from writing a sequel, but I'd have to see the 
contract to know for sure.
Mel needs to contact the National Writer's Union, join, and take advantage of 
the experts they have on staff.
