   I agree completely except where you can actually see even small piles of
the clippings.  These tend to smother the grass.  This being the first year
with the three acres I mow I took all the clippings as much because I was
removing excess weed seed as anything else. Those dandy lions are murder
though edible.  This year I will have better control of the weeds and mowing
so I will only bag and compost the clippings every other week.  I mow very
high and every week.  This usually gives me a lot of growth, little weed,
and great moisture retention.  A lawn can be like a mini rainforest.  People
who mow seldom then take 3/4 of the growth off at once and leave it there
always end up with burnt lawns.  I will not mow that way for anybody.  If
you must shorten a lawn that has been unattended to long then do it in
stages by cutting as high as possibly the first time and remove the
clippings.  Then shorten it 1 notch the following week still removing the
clippings.  Once you get it down no further than 2 inches then leave all the
clippings unless there visible piles.  That's where the newer mulching
mowers come in handy.  They don't pile it up nearly as much.
