I think it depends on the variety of onions. Garlic, at least the common
variety, can be harvested at any time. If you leave it in the ground, the
cloves just get bigger and multiply. With onions, it's harder to say without
knowing the variety. Some onions, such as Walla-Walla, are best left in the
ground over winter and harvested the following summer. Storage onions that
I've grown are harvested after the tops die back. They keep for months. Top
setting onions (AKA multiplier, Egyptian, walking, etc.) are MOL perennial
and can be harvested any time. I've grown one variety of scallions and they
are winter hardy -- so they also can be eaten any time. In the winter, I
just have to shovel snow to find them.

HI All

I planted garlic and onion (sets) late last spring and over the summer
thought they had all died without drout. So imagine my surprise when I went
to look yesterday and see what I would have to weed out of the garden before
I could plant it to discover that the onions and garlic are growing! Not all
but some of them are there...

My question is should I harvest them now or wait until the fall of this year
to dig them up? I have no idea how big they are - the growth is not very
high, maybe about 4 to 5 inches.
