   I can't remember if it worked or not, but I did this and realized that 
it not only affected the ants, but it destroyed plants and grass that were
surrounding the ant hills. One thing that worked was using wood ashes on
ant hills ( just make sure the fire is out before putting them on the ant
hills!) and a boric acid solution. Both of these worked well for me, and
I am in need of doing this again, as I am starting to see ants again on my
side gate.
