Howdy Cheri et al;
What you buy at the store are known as onion sets. They will grow and
develop into one onion bulb. If you were to let them grow a second season,
then they would have seeds that you may be able to plant. The sets will not
produce the green onions. Only the seeds will do that.
If you plant the seeds, you may get full size onions or you may just get
sets, depending on your growing season and when you plant them.
Why not try a little of both? Plant the sets for onion bulbs and plant
some seeds for the green onions. You could also buy onion plants that are
very small and bunched up-bare root- in groups of 50 or so. They grow into
nice green onions and the ones in the ground after thinning into bulbs.

If at first you don't succeed, maybe you shouldn't try sky-diving!
