Howdy Cheri et al;
>What you buy at the store are known as onion sets. They will grow and
develop into one onion bulb. If you were to let them grow a second season,
then they would have seeds that you may be able to plant. The sets will not
produce the green onions. Only the seeds will do that.
>If you plant the seeds, you may get full size onions or you may just get
sets, depending on your growing season and when you plant them.

Well Dan... Et al;
VanZyverden (correct spelling) says this... on the sets pkgs, all.
Plant 2-3" DEEP in rows... for GREEN onions.
Plant 4" APART in rows... for DRY onions, only as deep so as to just cover the
top of the sets.
Sounds almost like planting a mini leek, for the green ones.
I plant the bottom 3/4 inch of green bunch onions in a window box, 1" apart,
and harvest 1 leaf from each of 3-6, for stir fries and salads once or twice a
week. It's 4-6" x 16 so 30 fit in it. After a year, 1-2 inches of the 6"
deep, are used up. So I add well composted store manure (probably very dead
mushroom compost,) to the bottom and mix as best I can.
