Pesticides

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

I'm not an organic fanatic, but I thought I'd share this story.

Last week I was digging postholes for a new square foot raised bed and
found that my clay was infested with hibernating bugs. They look a lot like
June bugs but I'm not sure. So I put one in a jar and was asking my
neighbor what he thought it was. He said he didn't really know, that it
looked like a June bug or maybe a cicada.

"But you know what you should put on it?" he asked. Then he led me to his
garden shed and pulled out a lawn pesticide/fertilizer and told me I should
use it.

Neither June bugs or cicadas were mentioned on the label as being critters
that the pesticide would kill.

So here he doesn't know what kind of bug it is, whether it does any damage
and so should be killed, and he recommends that I put a chemical on it that
doesn't even kill the kind of bugs that it might be. Sigh.

So does this sound like a June bug to you? Should I be trying to control them?
