Rachel, I'm located down near the confluence of the American & Sacramento in
the valley.  Have used redwood for years. Excellent durability, pretty and
up until the last few years, econimical. I use 2' long 4X4 posts at the
corners and also in the center (for added reinforcement). For the sides I
have the lumberyard rip a 12' long 12" X 2" into 2 12' long 12" x 1". this
makes a 4'x8' bed. Grow all my annuals in them.

For perrenials I use the untreated landscape timbers, the ones that are
rounded on the sides, but flat on top & bottom. Gives some added drainage
with the semi-raised bed.

Just think how much more clay soil you'd have it hadn't been washing down
here for the last million or so years!
