IIRC, Mel does talk about container gardening as well. As long as you're
thinking intensive gardening in small areas, I wouldn't think it would be off
topic. Personally, I'd love to discuss it.
I started my summer garden in containers set against a south wall, and used
clear plastic to protect them during the last cold snap (well, cold for us
here in San Diego -- there was a light frost, okay? That's as bad as it ever
gets. I split six early girl tomatoes into three on the south wall in
containers, three in my SFG out front. The Southsiders are four times --
yes, FOUR TIMES -- the size of the Fronters and already have tomatoes on
them. Not eating size yet, just golfball sized green ones.
I've also got all my sweet pepper on the Southside, the hot ones out front.
I used the same Mel mix for soil in my containers and planted even a little
more closer together than Mel recommends.
When it's definitely going to stay warm, I'll move all the containers out
into the same area as the SFGs. Around the same time, I'm going to try
putting in some more spinach etc in a cooler spot near a faucet, and perhaps
try a water mister to get them through the summer. My neighbor's mister for
his chickens only uses a couple of gallons a day, and I figure it might be
fun to try it.
If you do find a great container gardening list, perhaps you'd post the
details? I'd be interested.
