Interestingly enough, our Master Gardening class yesterday was on small
fruit production (pomology), with the instructor focusing mainly on fruit
trees. Good info. In passing, tho, he commented that strawberries are
"usually, almost always, treated as annuals" in our area (Georgia).
Another example of how making blanket statements from our own individual
locales and our own individual experience and research may NOT be
appropriate for everyone on the list. (And another reason, IMO, why people
should include their locations somewhere in their posts -- as a first clue.)

"Runners take fruiting energy" is the key point, it seems to me. You seem
to be describing a sort of hybrid version of the two systems. Kewl.
