Re: Tennessee sq ft-ers

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Yes I'm in SE Monroe county, I thought when I moved here in the mountains that deer would do me in, but so far it's the rabbits. I did have a groundhog come by a couple of years ago and do in a patch of turnips. Luckily I caught him in the act and he developed a fatal case of lead poison.  I cover my boxes with floating row cover now and keep it on as long as possible, the rabbits seem to leave the veggies alone after they (the veggies) get more mature. It also helps greatly with insect control later in the season. My major fights the last two years have been with the Japanese beetles and grasshoppers. The beetle traps seem to help a lot but some times I think they just attract more beetles. The grasshoppers have almost got me back on the chemical sprays. In the past I've not had any qualms about using every chemical known to man but I'm trying to be as organic as possible now. I'd like to try some chickens or guinei (sp) fowl for the hoppers, but the wife says no to that idea. Plus we have a lot of foxes, so that would just create more problems. Good luck with your square foot gardens, I know I'll never go back to the old row style that I used when I was younger.

South Knox County here---with two first time 4 x 4 squares. Peas, onions,
lettuce, greens all doing well. It will probably snow next week! I clipped my
Airedales last week and scattered dog hair on mulch around the squares. I'm
hoping that will discourage rabbits. Wishful thinking?
