Strawberries

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Funnily, I got into SqFting because I happened to come upon the TV show back
when it was on Discovery Channel (wish HGTV would consider
running it!)

Cyn, Mel was making a strawberry pyramid with 4x4,3x3, 2x2, and 1x1
boxes. He spaced the plants at 1 ft distances. I tried this myself and was
fairly successful. You can buy round aluminum frames to do the same thing
from Gurney's and other seed catalogs.

I still space my berries about 1 ft apart, but now I do them in a long area
that runs the length of my community garden. I am going to try mulching them
w/cardboard since I am cursed with wild mint and other
weeds growing among them, and it is hard to fit black plastic or the like
around the plants. I also like to interplant the berries with
flowers since the berries grow low and the flowers can shade them a
bit in summer heat.

Last year I got at least a pint a day for several weeks from my everbearers,
just in time to celebrate the arrival of my second baby.
I think I would've gotten more over the summer, but severe heat and
the kids kept me away from the garden, which is at least a mile away from my
house. I just hope the plants will do well this summer, but they seem to be
growing nicely right now.

Dreaming of my childhood favorite, strawberries and sour cream, with a
sprinkling of sugar (even better if you add blueberries)........

ground--or at least in peat pots in the yard)
