OT: Martha Stewart (was: Fish Heads as Fertilizer)

I think those who ridicule Martha Stewart are probably not really all that
familiar with her work and products. I was very pleased with some gardening
products I bought last year -- things not widely available elsewhere, like
an old fashioned (birch?) bushel basket, and some really  decent tools --
things other companies haven't apparently thought of. 

This year, as I think I noted before, she's expanded the gardening product
line, and has also introduced seeds which I think are probably excellent.
For one thing, the back of the seed packet has much more information than
any other company's I've seen. Useful and interesting info. And, as I also
noted, there are some heirloom seeds among her offerings. 

I've had a chance to watch her show a lot of mornings over the last year
(during my *wake up* time), and am frankly impressed. Oh, I'm not
interested in every single segment, but many are quite fascinating and
others quite useful. 

Here's what I especially appreciate about Martha Stewart: she broadens
people's horizons and instills an urge toward more creativity, graciousness
and artistry / craftsmanship in everyday living. Higher standards of
excellence on the homefront.

Often various segments touch on NOT so mundane things. I've seen so many
segments featuring artisans, craftspeople, and artists in fields and places
I would never have had an opportunity to visit myself, and I consider my
life enriched by those 15 or 20 minutes (sometimes longer) spent with these
talented and successful people. Also, antique experts.

I've written down some great recipes. I've gotten some excellent gardening
tips (or sometimes flower arranging tips or ideas), learned to do some
things that I'd never have even thought of doing myself (like covering a
table top with leather, or replacing a window pane), and so forth. 

Almost always I come away from her shows uplifted -- with a sense that it's
possible (and highly desirable) to add beauty and creativity to the most
mundane chores involved with keeping a home. (Well, okay, haven't seen any
good Martha tips on cleaning the toilet.<g>) 

I DON'T think working women and men will find the time (or the inclination)
to edge their cabinet shelves with scalloped paper, tie their folded towels
with ribbon, or make their own invitations, but these are interesting,
creative, gracious ideas.

I think there's value in what she's doing. And if she has gotten wealthy
bringing creative ideas to homes, decent quality products to gardeners, so
be it. I may envy her, but I don't resent her. 

Besides, anything that lifts the spirit, enhances our urge toward
creativity and our implementation of graciousness AND makes a ton of money
doing it is a VERY interesting phenomenon in this day and age. Very
interesting indeed. I salute her.
